“Luckily, you never will. I’ve only ever heard of a couple of cases where a witch was turned into a vampire and that was through her personal choice. No vampire – not even the sadistic ones – want to turn a witch. It’ll just incur the wrath of her family and friends. It’s stepping on dangerous ground”, he tells her. “And you have valid points but I still don’t believe that having feelings for people is an advantage. Not for a vampire, especially not one so heavily involved with Klaus. A vampire needs to be able to turn those feelings off… if anyone wanted to get to me, all they’d have to do was kidnap Stefan or Elena… or even Caroline and they’d have me exactly where they wanted me”, he pauses, frowning slightly as she puts down the menu, obviously engrossed in their conversation. It’s odd but he kind of likes having someone pay some interest in him for once – for someone to see him as more than just Stefan’s evil older brother. “And yes, caring for people makes you fight harder but I still believe it would be better to not care at all. Less opportunity for people to reach into your chest and figuratively tear your heart out. Being a vampire doesn’t just mean that I’m able to care more about people… it also means that when they choose something else or walk away or god forbid, die, I hurt more too. Why would anyone want that?” he asks her, his eyes trained on hers as he waits for her answer. “That’s the one part of humanity I’ll never understand. It’s like you want to be hurt. You blindly trust people and place your heart in their hands as if begging for them to break it. Why is that?” he asks curiously, his eyes narrowing as he tries to figure it out. “I assume the reason that you’re on our side of the war is to protect the people that you care about. Who are you trying to protect? What do you stand to gain from this?” he questions, his fingers tapping restlessly on the tabletop as he waits for Rachel to answer all his questions. “A… crack… house?” he asks, bursting into laughter as he looks at her. “Remind me not to get on your bad side. A witch with an evil streak. I like it”, he chuckles, his lips quirking up into a smirk as he looks at her, realizing that he’s probably just added another person to his list of people that he needs to protect. “Keep it up and you may just work your way onto my list of people I actually care about”, he says, meaning it as a compliment. “I especially love the confidence. You remind me of Katherine… well, Katherine back in 1868… in her good days. Now she’s just a bitch but back then, she was incredible”.

“You’re right,” she nods, agreeing with him, “Feeling things, like sadness and guilt, are just your emotions forcing you to deal with the hardship. Honestly, no one wants to deal with that.” The moments in her life where she has felt like her heart was being ripped out all seem so childish now. She can’t even really compare them to what Damon must have gone through. He’s outlived everyone he’s ever known. He’s killed people and seen friends die fighting alongside him. Some of which were probably fighting against Klaus, who Rachel has yet to face. “I guess the only explanation I can think of is that we feel the pain so we don’t take the love we get from people, like friends and family, for granted…” She used to envy anyone that had even just one friend, back when she had none. Rachel would always tell herself she didn’t need friends; that they were just going to get in the way of her dreams. Even when she joined Glee club, for a while she didn’t even care to make friends there- they just had to know how to sway in the background as she sang her solos. It wasn’t until New Directions lost their first try at regionals that she realized how much she was taking them for granted. She had to feel the pain of almost losing them and the club they fought so hard for, for her to truly appreciate them. “I don’t think I’d have any friends if I didn’t feel things like guilt or the pain of sadness. Cause then I’d just keep hurting them without a care in the world. I’d just be alone again.” If you would have asked her freshmen year if she hated being alone she would have just told you that it’s lonely on top- especially when you’re a star- but now that she knows what it’s like to have friends she can’t imagine her life without them. “I haven’t even seen Klaus yet…I don’t know anyone personally he’s possibly killed and I’ve never even lost someone before. But I think I’d feel more scared to feel nothing; it’d be like that person was never even there.” Rachel didn’t even want to think about seeing Quinn or Kurt or just anyone from New Directions die without feeling anything. “The only people I have in my life are my two dads and the few friends I’ve made in Glee Club; I’m fighting for them. I don’t know exactly what you’ve been through but it seems like you’ve been hurt a lot. I don’t blame you for wanting to protect your heart. In fact, part of the reason I’m protecting my friends is to protect myself from having to feel the pain of losing them.” She shook her head slightly, that last statement was a little selfish. “I promise I’ll do anything I can to help you protect the people you care about. I don’t think anyone deserves to feel that kind of pain.” She reaches out, taking his hand, and squeezing it to almost reassure him of her promise. “And…it wasn’t an active crack house…but thanks? You must have really loved her then; she shouldn’t have taken it for granted.”

“They do intensify”, he agrees, nodding his head slightly as he notices that she seems a little more relaxed around him now. It doesn’t look like she’s planning on exploding with embarrassment and although he’d never admit it, he likes talking to her. Talking to someone else who is either supernatural or has supernatural abilities is always easy because you don’t have to hide yourself from them but there’s something else about this conversation; something that he can’t quite put his finger on. He’s just enjoying speaking with her. Her opinions are valid and well formed and she clearly knows enough about vampires to make an executive decision on him and his lifestyle but at the same time, she hasn’t let her powers define her. She’s more than just a witch. “It’s a lot to handle, especially when you’ve just been turned. There’s all this guilt from the times you’ve slipped up and anger for being stuck this way forever, especially if the reason you turned ended up ripping out your heart and leaving you to survive by yourself. Believe it or not, I once lived like Stefan – only hunting animals because I wanted to be good – while Stefan was quite the little ripper. Oh, how times have changed”, he ponders, knowing that he sounds bitter and angry over the hand that he’s been dealt. Although he tries to hide it most of the time, he really is bitter over everything that life has thrown at him and that’s why he always skirts a little closer to danger than he should do, truly believing that a stake to the heart wouldn’t be a bad thing. “Truthfully, I wish that it would just stay switched off. Emotions are just a waste of time, especially when you live forever. They create weaknesses and considering everything that’s happening right now, I can’t afford to have weaknesses”, he tells her. His emotions – his feelings – for some of the people in this town really are his downfall. His feelings for his brother and Elena and her band of little friends, and to some extent, Katherine (old habits die hard) mean that people are able to overpower him if they want. “I’ll have to introduce myself to him, as well as all the others I haven’t met yet. It’s not every day that Mystic Falls welcomes so many new residents. Maybe I could even get some of them on our side”, he thinks out loud, already planning for ways to welcome more people into their ranks. “If you really wanted to escape a small town and head for your futures, you shouldn’t have come to Mystic Falls. There’s a slim chance of people surviving long enough to make it out and even if you do get that possibility… Mystic Falls does its best to drag you back in”.

“I’m so sorry, I can’t imagine what that must be like.” Rachel always felt guilty for all the horrible things she’s done to friends in the past, she can’t even fathom what it would feel like intensified. Especially when it’s something as big as taking someone’s life. Damon may not see it, but he really isn’t such a selfish monster like he tries to make himself sound. He wouldn’t feel the guilt if he was. “You know, the strong feelings you have for the people you care about can be strengths too.” She set the menu aside, folding her hands onto the table, giving him her full attention. “The need to protect those who care about you and who you care for in return makes you stronger. It can make you crazy, but nevertheless you’d do anything to protect them. Having something to lose can force you to work harder because you actually have something worth fighting for.” She doesn’t think she’d let herself be involved in this war if it wasn’t to protect her friends. It’s true what Damon says; there’s no guarantee she’ll even survive. But the fight to keep the others safe is what is helping her make this decision to fight. “I mean, I once sent someone to a crack house, mind you it wasn’t an active crack house, because I was afraid she’d take my friends away from me, that they’d love her more because she was better than me…I do stupid things when it involves my friends and maybe that’s a weakness but it also helps me make those kind of decisions….granted that example was a horrible one but you get my point.” That example makes her seem crazy and terrible but it’s the truth. To keep the love of her friends she’d do anything, even something so crazy as that. She likes to see it as a strength and not just a weakness. “I’m not sure what I’m getting myself into with all this and you’re right, I might not even make it out of Mystic Falls or even survive this war but my dreams are everything to me so I’m fighting for them just as much as I’m fighting for my friends.” A small, only slightly cocky, smile now directed towards Damon, “besides my talents are far too great to waste in some small town choir forever.”
